Morning Routines
Whether you are a morning person or not, the first few moments of each day help set the tone for what the remainder of the day will bring. The best part about those moments is that we have control over them. My challenge for each of you reading this post is to ask yourself - what were the first three things I did this morning after opening my eyes?
For a majority of you, that list most likely includes “looking at my phone”. Given the connected world we live in, it’s hard NOT to grab your phone and begin checking emails or scrolling through endless social media posts and news stories. However, what value is that action bringing you, especially if the social media posts spark negative emotions (comparisons, jealousy, wants, etc.), the emails are stressful and the news is full of crimes and hatred?
Rather than starting your day like that, what if you took control of those first few precious moments and did or consumed something that brought you joy and happiness. Imagine how this small change could make you feel not only in that moment but for the rest of your day. Whether it’s taking a few mindful deep breathes to integrate your body, reading a positive excerpt from your favorite book, saying a positive affirmation out-loud or performing a few asanas (yoga poses) to get your body moving - find what works for you with the time you have and make a conscious effort to do it!
To help you get started, below are two routines I do every morning to set the tone for the day:
Writing in my Five Minute Journal by Intelligent Change
Each page of this journal has the exact same framework and takes five minutes each day to complete. In the morning, I write what I am grateful for, what would make today great and a daily affirmation. At the end of each day, I go back to that same page and write three amazing things that happened that day and how I could have made it even better.
I have been using this journal for over two and a half years and it has helped me become more present, mindful and grateful. The journal forces me to take time each morning and evening to reflect on what I want to focus on, what I accomplished and what I should adjust for the future.
Reading one page from The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephan Hanselman
This book offers one meditation for each day of the year to reflect on.
After writing in my journal each morning, I read the daily meditation and take a moment to reflect on its meaning and how I can apply it in my daily life.
If you are interested in learning more about either of the above books and incorporating them into your morning routine, I have included links below to each product.
Now, I want to hear from you! What does your morning routine consist of? Comment below and share how you start each day, or plan to start each day moving forward, to set a positive intention. Remember, we only get to live each day once - so how will you spend your time?
Love,
Abby
